How to Clean an Eyeglass Case Safely
A dirty case can return dust, makeup, and abrasive particles to freshly cleaned lenses.

Empty the case, point the opening down, and remove loose debris without dragging it across the lining.
Choose a method for the actual construction
Wipe nonporous exteriors with a lightly damp cloth and mild soap when the maker allows it; spot-clean fabric according to instructions.
Wait for the lining to dry completely
Dry the case completely while open. Replace musty, shedding, sharp, or permanently gritty interiors.
Identify the lining before adding water
A fabric exterior does not prove that a case is washable. The interior may use glued foam, cardboard support, dyed fabric or exposed hinge parts. Look for the manufacturer’s care instructions. If they are absent, begin with dry debris removal and a cautious exterior wipe rather than soaking the entire case.
Hold the empty case open over a bin with the opening facing down. Gently tap out loose crumbs. Inspect seams and the hinge channel in good light. If grit remains embedded where lenses rest, rubbing harder can damage the lining without removing the problem; replacement may be more useful than a lengthy rescue attempt.
Choose the least invasive cleaning step

Do not cover a persistent odor
Perfume and scented sprays can leave residues while concealing dampness. Leave the empty case open in a dry ventilated place after permitted cleaning. If a musty smell returns, the lining sheds, or a stain feels sticky, retire the case. Do not use glasses to test whether a still-damp interior is ready.
Questions about care
Can the case go in a washing machine?
Only if the maker specifically allows it for the complete case. A washable cloth cover does not mean the hinge, shell and glued lining are washable.
Can I use disinfectant wipes inside?
Do not assume compatibility. Some chemicals can affect dyes, adhesive or frame surfaces later placed inside. Ask the case maker for a suitable method.
